In Milan the Carnival not end on Shrove Tuesday, but the following Saturday because, according to tradition, Sant'Ambrogio, the patron saint of Milan, was engaged in a pilgrimage and asked the people to wait for his return to begin the Lenten liturgy. So today in the archdiocese of Milan, the rite of ashes is celebrated the first Sunday of Lent, according to the Ambrosian rite.

Masks Carnival Ambrosiano

The protagonist of the Carnival is the mask of Milan Meneghino, witty and a good servant that makes fun of the artifacts of nobles. Milanese wearing a long brown jacket, shorts, red and white striped stockings, cocked hat and a wig with ponytail French.
The name comes from Domenighini , the servant who accompanied the nobles on Sundays at church or walking in Milan. In 1848, during the Five Days of Milan was chosen by the citizens of Milan as a symbol of heroism, since it represents some of the characteristics of the Milanese, such as industriousness and generosity.

Program Carnevale Ambrosiano 2011

The theme of Carnival 2011, Ambrosian Bestiary Millennial . The event takes place in three days with three initiatives throughout the city.
To the center of Milan you can meet the traditional masks of Carnevale Ambrosiano, Meneghini and Cecca. The festival will be dedicated to dancing and singing, while the main moments will, as usual, the Saturday before Lent (March 12, 2011) with the afternoon parade and evening show in Piazza del Duomo.
